Toronto Airspace Noise Review

Over the past few months, the consultants at Helios have been reviewing the feedback and issues shared with them as part of the Toronto Airspace Noise Review and identifying options to help mitigate aviation noise in our community.

The next round of public meetings will be held in March. Everyone is invited to attend the meeting that best suits their schedule or location. The meeting in Toronto, specifically, has been arranged on a Saturday morning to give those who are unable to attend weeknight meetings an opportunity to engage with this review.

In these meetings, the consultants will be presenting their thoughts on mitigation options as well as additional ideas you may have. At this stage, the recommendations have not been finalized – there is still an opportunity for the consultants to introduce and consider more options.

Meetings will be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, March 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Mississauga (Hilton Garden Inn, 1870 Matheson Boulevard)
  • Thursday, March 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Oakville (St. Luke’s Community Centre, 3114 Dundas Street West)
  • Saturday, March 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in North York (Novotel North York, 3 Park Home Avenue)

Have Your Say: Independent Toronto Airspace Noise Review

In May 2016, Toronto Pearson’s partner and Canada’s air navigation service provider, NAV CANADA, announced that they would be undertaking an independent review of the Toronto Airspace in order to identify opportunities to reduce community noise exposure.

The review is being conducted by a third party aviation consultancy firm, Helios, and is independent from the GTAA and airport operations. This is a unique opportunity for residents to share their feedback about noise management.

The review team will be holding a community consultation next week on Wednesday, September 28 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville (90 Bloor St. East).

At this meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the review team and share your comments on the draft Terms of Reference of the review. You can find the draft here.

Noise Bylaw Update

As you may know, the Municipal Licensing & Standards Division (ML&S) has been reviewing the city’s existing noise bylaw to ensure that the bylaw is up-to-date and comprehensive.

ML&S reported to the May meeting of the Licensing and Standards Committee meeting. You can read the report by clicking here.

The Committee moved to defer the item until September 2016, with the request that city staff establish a working group with representatives from the Toronto Noise Coalition, Residents’ Associations, construction and entertainment business associations, BIAs and other relevant stakeholders.

I’ll be sure to provide regular updates as the noise bylaw review process continues. More information about this review and current regulations can be found at this link.
