Fire Safety Campaign Begins with Smoke Detectors

Did you know that 59% of fires in single-family residential homes happen in those without a working smoke alarm?

The City of Toronto's Smoke Alarm Awareness Campaign reminds residents to check alarm systems periodically. Toronto Fire Services has concluded, through a comprehensive fire origin and cause analysis, that a large percentage of fires are preventable with functioning smoke detectors. To keep your home safe, make sure to:

  • Ensure there is a working smoke alarm on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas;

  • Change smoke alarm batteries every six months;

  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years; and

  • Test smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work.
