Speeding Up to Slow Down – Reducing the Speed Limit on Local Roads in Ward 15

Last term, City Council committed to reducing the speed limit on all local roads in Toronto to 30km/h through the introduction of Reduced Speed Areas (RSAs) as part of the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan. In 2021, City staff began installing 30km/h RSAs on a ward-by-ward basis, using a data-driven prioritization framework.

Earlier this month, I moved a motion at North York Community Council (NYCC) requesting Transportation Services to accelerate the installation of RSAs in the remaining two wards, which includes Ward 15 – Don Valley West. You can read my full letter to NYCC, here. My motion was adopted unanimously by NYCC.

Excessive speeds have been identified as a key contributing factor to traffic-related injuries and fatalities. A collision at 60 km/h has a 95% likelihood of causing death compared to one at 40 km/h with a 30% likelihood. At 30 km/h, the rate of survival is over 90%. Slowing down traffic saves lives and I look forward to seeing the speed limits reduced on local roads across Ward 15 - Don Valley West.
