Opening Letter

Dear Friends and Neighbours,

The days have grown longer and the sun is shining a little brighter as we welcome another summer in the city.

Last week, Torontonians cast their ballots to elect a new Mayor for the remainder of the 2022-2026 term. I'd like to congratulate Olivia Chow on her election as Mayor of Toronto and thank the other candidates who put their names forward in this by-election. I look forward to working with the newly-elected Mayor on the issues that matter most to Don Valley West residents, as well as the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our city.

In Toronto, summer is synonymous with Summerlicious – one of the City's most celebrated culinary programs. From July 7-23, you can enjoy special prix-fixe menus ranging from $20-$75 at over 200 locations across Toronto – a great opportunity to check out a new local business or explore a new cuisine. Years ago, I introduced Summerlicious as a former Director in Economic Development & Culture to boost Toronto's restaurant economy in the wake of the SARS epidemic. The program took on a new meaning as we grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic and remains a summer staple for many Torontonians.

Over the last year, many of the City's programs and processes have begun to transition from fully virtual to a hybrid model, giving residents the choice to participate in either format. City Planning has recently announced that beginning on July 19, the Committee of Adjustment will transition to a hybrid hearing model. While virtual participation remains a convenient option for many, I know some Don Valley West residents will welcome the opportunity to attend hearings at the North York Civic Centre for the first time since 2020.

A big thank you to everyone who attended my annual Community Environment Days at York Mills Collegiate Institute and Leaside Memorial Community Gardens. The events were a huge success and it was wonderful to connect with so many new and familiar faces across Don Valley West. Together, we diverted a significant volume of waste from landfill, including household hazardous waste, electronic waste, and gently used goods.

Finally, I want to wish you and your families a wonderful and safe summer. While this will be my last newsletter until September, my team and I remain ready to assist you by email at councillor_robinson@toronto.ca and by phone at 416-395-6408.
