Still No Opening Date for the Province's Eglinton Crosstown LRT

Despite repeated requests from City Council for an updated construction schedule, we still do not have an estimated completion date for the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT). I share the frustration of many residents of Ward 15 – Don Valley West with this seemingly unending construction project, which has had major impacts on our local community since it began in 2011. Spanning 19 kilometres, the much-anticipated Crosstown LRT will connect to 57 existing TTC routes and significantly improve transit service in Midtown Toronto.

As the project is being managed by Metrolinx, a Provincial agency, City Council does not have oversight on the cause of the continued delays. The latest official updates posted on the Metrolinx website indicate that while construction is almost complete, the project still must undergo "extensive" testing and commissioning before it can open. You can find more information here and here.

Almost one year ago, City Council voted in favour of a motion calling for a third-party review of the ongoing delays and cost overruns. The motion also requested that representatives from the Province and Metrolinx share an update on the estimated timeline for completion. As we look ahead to 2024, I will continue to support calls for increased transparency and a clear opening date for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT.
