Pedestrian Safety Improvements – Bayview Bridge Rehabilitation Project

This month at North York Community Council, I moved a motion directing Transportation Services to explore permanent pedestrian safety measures on the Bayview Bridge when the upcoming Environmental Assessment (EA) is completed.

In early 2024, Transportation Services will be initiating an EA of the Bayview Bridge to review rehabilitation and replacement options. In addition to structural improvements, the EA provides a unique and cost-effective opportunity to permanently create safer conditions for pedestrians through the installation of measures such as concrete barriers. While the EA is currently in the scoping phase, City staff will engage in public and stakeholder consultation at a later date.

I often hear from residents who are concerned about pedestrian safety on the Bayview Bridge. At this location, Bayview Avenue is a six-lane, major arterial road. Pedestrians using the Bayview Bridge often include school-age children travelling to and from Crescent School, Toronto French School, Crestwood School, and Glendon College, as well as visitors to the Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf.

In the past, I have worked with Transportation Services on temporary pedestrian safety improvements on the Bayview Bridge, together with Ward 15 residents. I am looking forward to engaging with the local community on permanent solutions as the EA begins next year.
