TTC Streetcar Procurement

Streetcars have been an essential part of Toronto's public transportation network since the TTC was established a century ago. From the first “Peter Witt” streetcars used in 1921 to the Bombardier Flexity streetcar used today, millions of transit riders have navigated our City using these iconic vehicles over the last 100 years.

In May, I was honoured to join representatives from all three orders of government to announce the procurement of 60 new TTC streetcars. This landmark investment will also fund necessary upgrades to the Hillcrest Facility, a priority project identified in the TTC's 15-Year Capital Investment Plan.

Prior to the pandemic, the TTC's streetcar network carried roughly 350,000 passengers each day. These additional streetcars will meet immediate fleet requirements, while also allowing us to reallocate the 50 buses currently supplementing streetcar service to priority routes throughout the City. The procurement of zero-emissions streetcars will also support the TTC's goal to become 100% net-zero emissions by 2040 and the City of Toronto's continued work towards our ambitious TransformTO targets.
